What is the Official Dua for Traveling (Safar Dua)?
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us a specific prayer to recite when beginning a journey. This dua acknowledges Allah’s power over all things, including our mode of transport. Furthermore, it reminds us of our ultimate return to Him.
Arabic Text
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ
Transliteration
Subhanalladhi sakh-khara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
English Translation
« Glory is to Him Who has provided this for us, and we would never have been able to do it. And behold, we are indeed to return to our Lord. »
The Powerful Benefits of Reciting the Dua for Travel
Reciting this dua is more than just a ritual. It brings immense spiritual and psychological benefits. In addition, it strengthens your faith and trust in Allah’s plan.
- Seeking Divine Protection: First and foremost, you are actively asking Allah to protect you from the potential dangers of the road, air, or sea. This brings a sense of security.
- Expressing Gratitude: The prayer begins by glorifying Allah for providing the means of transport. Consequently, it cultivates a heart full of gratitude for His blessings.
- A Constant Reminder: It serves as a reminder that our journey in this life is temporary. Ultimately, our final destination is our return to Allah.
- Achieving Peace of Mind: By placing your trust in Allah, you reduce travel-related anxiety. This allows you to enjoy a more serene and mindful journey.
How and When to Recite This Dua
The Sunnah (practice of the Prophet) provides clear guidance on when to say the traveling dua. You should recite it once you have settled into your vehicle, whether it’s a car, plane, train, or boat.
Upon saying the dua, it is also recommended to recite « Allahu Akbar » (Allah is the Greatest) three times. Then, you can continue with other personal supplications, asking Allah for goodness in your journey.
Additional Duas for a Complete Journey
To further enhance your spiritual protection, you can also incorporate other duas. For example, there is a specific dua for when you enter a new city or town.
Similarly, upon returning home safely, a different dua is recited to thank Allah for a successful trip. These practices together create a complete spiritual shield for the entire duration of your travel. Therefore, remember to seek them out for your next trip.
